Prevention of Stroke in atrial fibrillation
Prevention of Stroke in Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent
sustained cardiac rhythm disorder in
adult populations, and accounts for one
third of hospitalisations due to cardiac
rhythm disturbances. Although Atrial
Fibrillation itself is not life-threatening, it
leads to significant patient morbidity and
economic costs, and contributes to stroke, a
common life-threatening complication of atrial fibrillation.
This course covers the principal characteristics and causes of atrial fibrillation, including the classification schemes used for clinical evaluation of patients. It also identifies the common causes, symptoms and clinical consequences. It then describes the common diagnostic tools for stroke, the main consequences, the current therapies and their major drawbacks.
