Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease state characterised by progressive airflow limitation that is not fully reversible and is associated with an abnormal inflammatory reaction to chronic inhalation of particles or noxious gases.

It is estimated that approximately 5% of the world's population above the age of 45 have COPD, and its prevalence is still on the rise.
